Walking With Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune disease that can affect the small joints in the feet and ankles. It causes inflammation, pain, and swelling, which can make walking difficult. Over time, RA can damage the joints, leading to deformities such as bunions, hammertoes, and collapsed arches. This can result in pain with every step, stiffness, and loss of mobility. Many people with RA also experience fatigue, which adds to the challenge of staying active. Supportive footwear, custom orthotics, and bracing can help relieve pressure on painful joints. Targeting stretching and exercises that improve strength and flexibility may also make walking easier. If RA is affecting your feet, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist who can recommend treatments to reduce discomfort and prevent further joint damage.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Raul Hidalgo DPM of South Texas Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

Wounds That Don't Heal Need to Be Checked

Your feet are covered most of the day. If you're diabetic, periodic screening is important for good health. Numbness is often a sign of diabetic foot and can mask a sore or wound.

Breaking in new pointe shoes properly is essential for comfort, support, and performance. The first step is to identify the natural break in the arch by gently pressing the shoe to see where it bends most naturally. Once the natural break is found, carefully bending the shank at that point helps the shoe conform to the foot’s shape. Wearing the shoe and gradually working through movements allows the heat and moisture from the foot to mold the break further. Molding the shoe by lightly massaging the arch and wings helps soften the material without weakening its structure. Softening the box can be done by gently pressing on it with the hands or using controlled movements to make it more flexible. A well-broken-in shoe provides better support, reduces discomfort, and enhances overall performance. If you have foot pain from wearing any type of new shoes, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions, and guide you further on how to properly break in shoes.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Raul Hidalgo DPM from South Texas Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Facts About Foot Stress Fractures

Foot stress fractures are tiny hairline cracks in bones caused by repeated stress, especially common in the metatarsal bones of the feet. They are caused by activities involving frequent running, jumping, or dancing. Stress fractures, which are considered to be an overuse injury, lead to pain during physical activity, swelling, bruising, and tenderness when touched. Because stress fractures in the metatarsal bones are not easily detected through standard X-rays, a podiatrist may order advanced imaging, like a bone scan, for an accurate diagnosis. Treatment generally involves resting the affected area, using supportive devices like casts or protective footwear, or possibly surgery to ensure proper bone healing. Preventing metatarsal stress fractures includes gradually increasing activity levels and avoiding pushing through pain, which can result in further injury or prolonged recovery. If you suspect you have sustained a metatarsal foot stress fracture, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Raul Hidalgo DPM from South Texas Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

Importance of Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetic foot care is essential for managing the effects of diabetes on the feet. High blood sugar levels can cause poor circulation and lead to nerve damage, resulting in dry, cracked skin, sores, and changes in the shape of the feet. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and a loss of sensation, making it harder to notice injuries. If left untreated, cracks or sores can lead to infections, which can become serious for people with diabetes. A podiatrist can help manage and prevent these complications by providing regular foot exams and addressing any existing issues. This type of doctor can treat cracked skin and recommend diabetic-friendly footwear to reduce pressure on the feet. If sores or infections develop, a podiatrist can clean and dress the wounds, and in some cases, prescribe antibiotics. They may also provide custom orthotics to help with changes in foot shape. If you are experiencing any foot-related issues due to diabetes, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Raul Hidalgo DPM from South Texas Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.
